First, a little CBD 101: CBD is extracted from a Cannabis plant. Most people associate THC with recreational marijuana use because when consumed or smoked in high doses, it provides a mental “high.” CBD, especially from hemp plants, does not have the same intoxicating effect and is revered for its therapeutic results on a host of ailments.
Let’s be clear: the flower of both types of the cannabis plant – marijuana and hemp – contains THC and CBD (as well as a host of other nutrients and compounds), but in a marijuana plant, THC is the more dominant cannabinoid, and in a hemp plant CBD takes the lead. The majority of CBD extract used in CBD gummies available for wide-scale purchase in the U.S. today is sourced from hemp plants and contains very little-to-zero amounts of THC. Many companies do choose to offer CBD gummies that retain a small amount of THC because when the extract is left in its most natural form, all the plant compounds, terpenes, and cannabinoids work synergistically, often providing amplified benefits. This is known as the entourage effect.
There are three different forms of CBD used in CBD gummies. Depending on factors such as the entourage effect and potential concerns about THC showing up on mandatory drug tests, it’s important to consider which type will meet your needs. We’ve provided the cliff notes on the three types of CBD used in gummies.
Full-spectrum. Full-spectrum CBD includes all the terpenes, cannabinoids, and other nutritional components naturally present in hemp buds or flowers and provides the strongest entourage effect. Full-spectrum CBD does contain THC, although very small amounts. Full-spectrum CBD is legal for sale in the U.S. when THC levels are tested and come in at less than .30 percent of the total weight. Although such a small amount of THC is not likely to have an intoxicating effect, it still could be detectable in blood tests. Those subject to drug testing should steer clear of full-spectrum CBD.
Broad-spectrum. Broad-spectrum CBD has gone through an additional extraction process to remove all the THC components of the extract. Terpenes and cannabinoids remain during this process, so broad-spectrum CBD still offers somewhat of an entourage effect, although not as strong as broad-spectrum CBD.
CBD Isolate. CBD Isolate contains CBD, and CBD alone! Although Isolate is still sourced from the hemp plant, which contains all the compounds found in full and broad-spectrum CBD, Isolate has been purified to remove THC and terpene compounds. When taking Isolate CBD, no entourage effect is offered. Still, there may be some benefit to Isolate CBD — but its questionable what effect this form of CBD has on inflammation and pain management, and it may be better at treating anxiety disorders.
CBD is praised for treating insomnia, warding off nasty side effects of chemotherapy, and lowering anxiety. Cannabinoids like CBD work with the body’s own endocannabinoid system to lessen inflammation and chronic pain. While CBD oils tend to be more concentrated and are a more direct route into the bloodstream, many people are unable to tolerate the taste or texture.
